●      Symptoms of TMJ -

It’s reported that roughly 10 million people experience some type of TMJ related symptom everyday. The temporomandibular joint is one of the most important structures of your jaw by acting as a sliding hinge connecting your jawbone to your skull. Patients experience limitations and deviations in the jaw’s normal range of motion, aching pain, difficulty sleeping, as well as locking of the joint. This explains why patients commonly refer to it as ‘locked jaw’ when having difficulty opening and closing their mouth.

●      Causes of TMJ -

Injury to teeth, misalignment of the teeth or jaw, teeth grinding and gum chewing can cause TMJ symptoms to occur. Poor posture, stress, and arthritis are multiple factors that contribute to muscle tightness and dysfunction that distinguish this condition. It is not yet known if these causes directly lead to TMJ syndrome or simply as a result to this disorder.
